In 1899 the Secretary of State allowed,

after argument, legislation permitting a European

Sergeant of Police to enter a suspected brothel

without notice; closing orders to be issued by a

Magistrate on being satisfied of use as a brothel.

In 1900 335 brothels had been vacated. The distinction

between "sly brothels" and "regular professed brothels"

had returned.
